Groups for the Homeschooled Child

Thinking Outside the Classroom....

Introducing social-emotional skills groups designed with the homeschooled child in mind! We offer:

  • desirable meeting times (mornings and early afternoons)
  • an understanding of the various ways a child can be gifted
  • flexible curriculums
  • methods for closing the gap between cognitive and social-emotional skills
  • facilitated social interactions (beyond just recess...)

Key Skills Group

50-minute group for boys and girls ages 8-10 or 9-11.  The children will work together on a game or project designed to promote cooperation, teamwork, social communication, frustration tolerance, and social problem-solving skills.  At this age, we also concentrate on appropriate use of humor/sarcasm/silliness and responding to social cues. The curriculum will be infused with topics pertinent to the particular mix of children, as needed (e.g., coping skills, negative thought challenging, conversational skills).  While there is a curriculum, it is flexible and allows for responding organically in the moment to what will best benefit the group as a whole.

Morning Playgroup

50-minute playgroup for boys and girls ages 5-7.  This group is designed to provide both facilitated free play opportunities and participation in structured activities.  Young children benefit from learning conflict negotiation strategies along with social communication skills in a controlled environment with peers.  The focus moves beyond sharing and taking turns to a more nuanced skill set including initiating and leaving play, compromising play ideas, handling teasing, and good sportsmanship.  We are always working on building social confidence and improving emotional regulation.  Therapists facilitate the social moments that arise spontaneously during peer interactions while also providing concrete skills.
